Kawasaki Heavy Industries/Nippon Sharyo C751B Cars

Introduction

Operating on the North South Line and East West Line ever since year 2000, the C751B trains are part of the newest rolling stock used in Singapore's MRT network. A total of 21 trainsets were bought and this is the first rolling stock which features the VVVF Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor traction control system. Kawasaki Heavy Industries manufactured 66 cars while Nippon Sharyo manufactured 60 cars with no comparable differences as they were built to the specifications given.

Individual carriages have a four-digit serial number given by SMRT Corporation. The car numbers of the trains range from x311 to x352, where x depends on the carriage type.

The C751B train's exterior is painted with a black and grey background with a red stripe in between. The trains have a slanted and streamlined look, unlike the older C151 trains which have flat frontal structures. Run number displays on the front of the train are in orange LED displays.

Interior Design

The C751B trains were introduced to the MRT system in the year 2000, making them relatively new as compared to the C151 and C651 versions of the MRT trains. Many modifications have been made to the C751B, making it a far improved version of a train as compared to the C151 and C651 trains.

For the convenience and comfort of commuters, the seats of the C751B trains are wider than those of the C151 and C651 trains. The grabpoles have incorporated the design that splits it into three at the centre, allowing commuters to have better support. Wheelchair spaces and more space near the doors have been added, providing more space for commuters to stand in each carriage and space for people on wheelchairs to "park" their wheelchairs.

The C751B trains also have LCD displays in-between advertisement plates near the upper centre portion of the seats. These LCD displays allow short clips to be run, including movie trailers, advertisements, and station information.

The colour scheme of the C751B trains have also been modified, but only slight changes have been made. The orange colour scheme at the end carriages has been changed to a pink colour scheme, and the shades of blue and green used in the other carriages has been changed as well. The floor of the train has also been changed to a distinctive dark greenish teal colour, and the walls are painted white in colour.

The one most significant experimental programme that has been carried out on the C751B train is the introduction of luggage racks on the trains operating along the East West Line, which stop at Changi Airport station. The luggage racks were meant for the use of passengers who needed a place to deposit their luggage, but it ended up being underused as commuters preferred to hold on to their luggage, fearing that their luggage could be stolen. The racks also took up standing place for commuters, and they was finally removed in 2003.
